Culture Jam

In the first two sections of part one of the book the author gives us a lot to think about and makes some really interesting points about our society and what it is becoming. I don't feel that "detachment from nature" is as extreme of a problem as the author makes it seem, but I do think it's important for us to realize how society has changed. In one passage the author talks about plentitude and never really feeling truly satisfied. I do agree that we are too materialistic, but I feel that by telling us how meaningless our lives are, the author is trying to make us feel unsatisfied, when really most of us are happy. I personally like the way I live and my technology and it hasn't become a problem or taken over my life.

  1. Courtney,
Interesting thoughts here. I really like your statement that you feel while the author is trying to make us feel that our lives are meaningless, most of us are truly happy with the status quo. This may be. I guess my only question would be, what have we forsaken or forgotten on our speedy path to a more and more satisfying technological life?

  2. I agree with the points you make. I feel the same way about the author trying to say that we are unsatisfied. Just because our technology has gotten to a level that makes our lives easier doesnt mean we abandon our surroundings of nature. Its just the society we grew up in so we dont think of it in a bad way.

  3. You make very valid points. Many people are too materialistic and will always want more, but there are others, like yourself, that feel that they have enough and are satisfied. The beliefs of the author are extreme and may push us in the opposite direction, as you have been, from his attitudes. Do you ever feel that your technology needs and upgrade or that you need the better version of it though?

  4. I agree with your post very much. Many rely on technology too much, however, like you said and for myself, do not rely on it as much. Society has changed and will keep changing, therefore we need to adapt as well to the changes.
