I was not too surprised by the ending of A Clockwork Orange. If the book ended with Alex remaining completely unchanged it would have been kind of pointless. However, I think that the drastic turnaround he made was a little unrealistic. I do believe that it is possible to reform criminals, but I don't think Alex could all the sudden decide he wanted to grow up and be a better person after committing so many brutal acts throughout his teen years. I think reforming a criminal takes time and they have to actually realize that they have done something wrong. Throughout the entire book Alex had no desire to become a better person and saw nothing wrong with what he was doing; he actually enjoyed it. Even after being in prison he still intended to commit violent acts as soon as he was released. In order for a criminal to be truly reformed they have to want to change, it cannot be forced upon them as it was for Alex. In the end, the aversion therapy had no impact on Alex changing his ways, it was the realization of what he wanted out of life and his future.

  1. I agree with you, in order for someone to change they have to be willing to be fully committed. To me also the aversion therpay didnt work, but at the end of the day it did wake Alex up towards the end of the book. But what really took toll on Alex was when he seen his friend with a family, so maybe thats what he needed to rethink his life.

  2. Yeah I thought it was unrealistic too how Alex just suddenly changed at the end. The therapy worked for a short time yes, but he still had the desire to commit the crimes. He wasn't given a choice and he didn't really want to reform. He was never remorseful.

  3. I agree as well, I'm a bit skeptical of how he just decided he wanted to change. If he can make up his mind that fast what is keeping him from going back to the way he had use to be? I get the the insight that he would be a better man because he said he was going to tell his son to not be as he once was. Although this violence was just a phase, what if this wanting a family is a phase as well?
